THE long-awaited right hand drive versions of the VW Golf GTi and the VW Scirocco GLi will go on sale in Britain next month. These high performance cars from Volkswagen have achieved a consistent record of wins on the racing circuit since they were introduced in Europe at the end of 1975. In Britain, Richard LIoyd's left-hand drive Golf GTi won its class in the 1978 Tricentrol Saloon Car Championship and is currently leading again in this year's Championship.
Both cars have a watercooled 1600cc overhead camshaft engine with K-Jetronic fuel injection producing 100bhp. The Golf GTi has a top speed of 113 mph and a 0-60 acceleration time of 9.0 seconds: the Scirocco GLi's top speed is 115mph and can reach 0-60 in 8.8seconds. A high torque is available through a wide range of engine speeds which means that both models are extremely flexible and docile in traffic.
Despite their performance. which puts them in the same class as the leading sports saloon cars, both cars return a remarkable fuel consumption, thanks to their light weight, low aerodynamic drag and the efficient mechanical fuel injection system. The Golf GTi returns an overall 35mpg (DIN) and the Scirocco 35.2mpg (DIN).
To cope with the additional power from the 110bhp engine, the suspension has been Iowered and uprated with stiffer springs and shock absorbers. The track width has also been increased and both models sport 5.5J inch wheels with wider 175 x 13 high speed radial tyres. Bucket-shaped seats, halogen headlamps and front spoilers are available as standard for both the Golf GTi and Scirocco GLi to add to their distinctive sporty look.
A special high specification Scirocco GLi – the Scirocco Storm - is also being sold in the UK. It is available only in black or green metallic paint. with a choice of fawn or black leather upholstery. It has leather trimmed Recaro seats, leather door panels and a leather trimmed steering wheel.
Prices of the three models are: Golf GTi £4.705, the Scirocco GLi £5750, the Scirocco Storm £6.280.
All models are covered by a l2-month unlimited mileage warranty, plus Volkswagen's recently introduced six year anti rust warranty on all body panels.
